Mycelium against the memory-layer category, on the axes procurement scores against.
Last updated: 2026-05-05
Comparison
Eight axes. Six direct competitors plus Mycelium. Each row sources to a vendor's own public docs, official pricing pages, or YC company page. Re-evaluated quarterly. The most recent re-evaluation pass landed 2026-05-04 as the Mycelium Competitive Landscape research; this page is the customer-facing distillation. Where a vendor publicly claims a capability, the row has the link. Where a claim is not public, the row says so.
Eight axes (definitions)
- Plain-text customer-owned memory. Memory in readable, portable format (Markdown / JSON over Git), not a proprietary binary blob the vendor owns.
- Version-controlled (Git-style). Branching, merging, and time-travel against the customer's own Git remote.
- Multi-tenant safe. Per-tenant authentication and isolation suitable for a Fortune 100 procurement review.
- Audit-logged R/W. Timestamp + actor + source on every read and write, append-only retention.
- Model-portable. Same memory works under Claude, GPT, Gemini, Llama without re-migration.
- Open core (MIT / Apache). Substrate is publicly licensed open-source; runtime ships under commercial license.
- Ten or more enterprise connectors. Live, supported, customer-deployable connectors to enterprise systems (Salesforce, Slack, ServiceNow, etc.).
- Bi-temporal queries. Queries answer what was true at time T against memory itself, not just at the system's transaction time.

Per-vendor notes
- Mycelium8/8
Full coverage on all eight axes. Open core under MIT at github.com/adelaidasofia/ai-brain-starter; productized commercial runtime at myceliumai.co. Trust Center carries the live cert + audit cadence.
- Mem05/8
Closest enterprise feature surface. SOC 2 + HIPAA + BYOK + Kubernetes / private cloud / air-gapped deployment + audit log + open core (Apache-2.0, ~48K stars). Lacks plain-text customer ownership, Git-style version control, and bi-temporal queries. Funded $24M total (Kindred Ventures + Basis Set Ventures), YC S24.
Temporal knowledge graph with sub-200ms p99 published claim, SOC 2 Type II + HIPAA. Multi-tenant SDKs (Python, TS, Go). Bi-temporal queries via validity ranges. No plain-text customer-owned substrate, no Git-style versioning. YC W24.
- Cognee4/8
World-model knowledge graph with ECL pipeline (Extract, Cognify, Load). Multi-tenant, on-prem, fine-grained permissions. Apache-2.0 core (~12K stars). $7.5M seed early 2026 (Pebblebed-led). No plain-text substrate, no Git-style versioning, no public bi-temporal API.
- Hyperspell3/8
Closed-source SaaS, multi-SaaS connectors (Gmail, Slack, Notion, Drive). SOC 2 + GDPR claimed. Tom Blomfield batch partner. No open core, no on-prem, no Git versioning, no bi-temporal queries. ~$2M raised, YC F25.
Full agent runtime inspired by OS memory hierarchies. Apache-2.0 core (~16K stars). Recently shipped Context Repositories (Git-based versioning + branching). Memory tightly coupled to the Letta runtime; not a neutral substrate other agents can read. ~$10M seed (Felicis-led).
- MemoryLake5/8
Strong governance, traceability, conflict resolution, timeline backtracking (bi-temporal). Multi-model + portable. Closed-source. Generous free tier. Funding details thin in public sources. Often ranks 'best overall for AI memory infrastructure' in third-party comparisons.
